Hosting - Web Host - Domain Name - Datacenter
For a web site to be available on the Internet, it need to be hosted on a web server. This service is called web hosting. It's just like renting property, but you rent a disk space and the internet connection which makes you're web site available to possible customers.
There are plenty of hosting companies that will rent you space on a web server, starting at $5.77/ mo over to $500/ mo if you're site requers more resurse. The wide range of services start from free host to buying a server for your sole use. You could spend thousands of dollars a year on web host alone.
Domain name: Every web site needs a domain name. If you are a business, you ideally need your own domain name. If you are working on a personal homepage, a domain name isn't as important. Some people judge the quality of a web site by it's domain name. To get your own domain name click here! Types of web hosting plans:
Web hosting plans range from free personal homepage hosting to large global corporate web sites. If you have a personal web page and you have a low budget it's recommended to chose a free web host. If you're needs don't cover what a free web host offer, you should consider buying a shared hosting.
Shared Hosts could be on a Linux Server or on a Windows Server. If you know ASP language, and you're site would contain ASP you will need a Windows Hosting. If you are a corporate or you're site needs a lot of resource you really need a Dedicated Server.
A dedicated server is one where you rent the use of a whole server. This can be used to host one or more of your web sites. Because you are renting the use of a machine, you have increased control over what software will be installed on the machine. You can even specify the set up, you can chose how many HDD you're server will contain, how much RAM, the power of the CPU, the Operating System, some web host providers can let you remote control you're server. The major benefit is that this allows increased traffic to your sites. You could alternatively co-locate your own server at the host's data center who can look after it for you.
Some large web hosts own their own datacenter (collection of servers), some rent a server from a larger web hosting company and then resell the space under their own company name. In this case the web host will manage your account on the server, but they will be renting the actual web space from another much larger company.

How to Select a Webhost
Be sure to inform yourself first, and know exactly what it is you are paying for. Here are some minimum equirements involved to ensure the potential for long term growth of your business on a linux hosting
- User access by means of cPanel control panel. cPanel is the most beginner friendly interface, while still providing all the features any professional webmaster could want. Any webhost provider that uses cPanel will say so clearly, somewhere on their sales page. So be sure to look for the word cPanel when choosing a webhosting provider.
- POP email accounts (ie. you@yoursite.com) to provide you with a professional business image in your email communications. NEVER use Hotmail, Yahoo, etc. for business purposes. It looks tacky!
- A minimum of 10 Gb of disk space allotted to your site. (Think of this as the floor space inside the building where you will open your store.) Webpages themselves do not occupy much space. Webpage graphics sometimes do. eBooks, softwares, and other downloadable files definitely require a lot of space. A site offering ebooks and oftwares for sale and/or download may eventually need 1000 megabytes (approx. 1 gigabyte or GB) or more of space. If you don't need the space right away, consider it room for expansion.
- A generous allowance for monthly transfer. This refers to the
number of customer pageviews, graphic displays, downloads and
other information transfers that are allowed to happen on your
website in any 30 day period. 50 GB (gigabyte) monthly is about the
minimum acceptable for a beginning site. BEWARE that many
discount webhosting services offer lots of goodies upfront, but are
very restrictive about monthly transfer allocation. You don't want
your site to be shut down at 10 am on a busy morning just because a lot of customers showed up! - Capabilities for CGI, MySQL and PHP. If these terms sound like a foreign language, don't be concerned at this point. Just be sure you either have them upfront, or can upgrade in the future.
- Built in FTP (file transfer protocol - the software you will use to upload pages, graphics, ebooks, etc.) or at least convenient and unlimited remote FTP access. You don't want to be restricted as to when and how you can edit your pages and work on your site.
- A statistics log where you can go to keep track of how many visitors are coming to each indiviual page on your domain.
If all this sounds a bit overwhelming to you, don't be alarmed. These things only sound intimidating because they are unfamiliar right now. Later on, they won't be.
